تأسست شركة بترومين عام 1968م بموجب مرسوم ملكي، وقد كان اسم الشركة عند تأسيسها" شركة بترومين لزيوت التشحيم (بترولوب)" حيث كانت إحدى مشاريع المؤسسة العامة للبترول والمعادن بترومين بعد تحويل حصة بترومين في الشركة إلى شركة أرامكو السعودية في عام 1997م تمت إعادة تسمية الشركة لتصبح الشركة العربية السعودية لزيوت التشحيم. باعتبار أن المملكة العربية السعودية هي أكبر منتج للبترول وتملك المكونات الأساسية لإنتاج زيوت التشحيم والشحوم، فقد كان من الطبيعي إنشاء شركة متخصصة لصناعة هذه السلعة الإستراتيجية مواكبةً للطفرة والتطور الذي تشهده الصناعة في المملكة تم تشييد أول مصنع خلط تابع لها في مدينة جدة في عام 1970م حيث كانت الطاقة الإنتاجية التصميمية للمصنع 70,000 طن متري تمت مضاعفة إنتاجه لتغطية حاجة السوق المتزايدة لزيوت التشحيم و بطاقة إنتاجية 250,000 طن متري سنويا, ولمواجهة التوسع الجغرافي والنمو الصناعي السريع للملكة العربية السعودية واكتمال بنيتها الأساسية كان مبرراً كافياً لبناء مصنع آخر بالرياض عام 1982م وبطاقة إنتاجية 150,000 طن متري.

ومن الطبيعي أن زيادة الطاقة الإنتاجية للمصانع مكّن الشركة من عقد اتفاقيات للخلط للأطراف الأخرى استطاعت من خلالها الشركات المنافسة من خلط منتجاتها، مقابل رسوم خلط، لدى مصانع بترولوب مستفيدة من الطاقة الإنتاجية الفائضة لهذه المصانع وقد كان من بين الشركات التي خلطت لدى مصانع بترومين شركات عالمية كشركة موبيل وإلف وأجيب وقلف وتوتال وشركات أخرى . قررت الشركة في عام 1995م بناء مصنع لإنتاج البراميل خاص بها بمدينة الرياض لتغطية احتياجاتها من البراميل الجديدة التي تزيد عن 200,000 برميل في العام، وبيع الكميات الفائضة لأطراف الخلط الأخرى و هذا المصنع يعمل الآن ضمن اطار مشروع مشترك مع شركات عالمية منذ تأسيسها وخلال عمرها الذي امتد لمدة أكثر من 45أ عاماً، واصلت شركة بترومين انتشارها ونمو طاقتها الإنتاجية وتطوير منتجاتها وحرصاً من الشركة لتظل في ريادتها مستفيدة من أحدث التقنيات ولتكون منتجاتها في الطليعة, وقد تحقق لها ذلك حيث حصلت على مصادقات صناع المحركات لاستخدام منتجاتها في محركاتهم وكذا الالتزام بمعايير الجودة والأداء لمعهد البترول الأمريكي ومعايير الجودة للهيئات العالمية الأخرى. تنتج شركة بترومين حالياً ما يزيد عن 150 منتجاً وتحظى زيوت بترومين بحصة في السوق السعودي تبلغ ، كما تصدّر منتجاتها لأكثر من 35 دولة بمجلس التعاون والشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا وآسيا.

أما في الحالات التي لا يكون فيها التصدير ذا جدوى اقتصادية وفي ذات الوقت يكون هناك طلب لمنتجات زيوت بترومين، تلجأ الشركة لإبرام اتفاقيات لخلط وتسويق زيوت بترومين في المنطقة مقابل رسوم امتياز حيث تصنّع هذه الزيوت وتسوّق وفق مواصفات ومعايير زيوت بترومين وعلامتها التجارية ووفق ضوابط الشركة وإجراءاتها في هذا الصدد.

   Petromin Corporation was formed in 1968 by a Royal decree. On the date of its inception, the company's name was Petromin Lubricating Oil Company (Petrolube) which was one of the joint ventures of the General Organization of Petroleum and Minerals (Petromin).

The company was renamed as the Saudi Arabian Lubricating Oil Company in 1997. Since 2008, the company is now simply called Petromin Corporation.

The purpose of establishing the company was to provide lubricants to the Saudi market as strategic commodity that has become increasingly necessary and in-demand to the development of Saudi Arabia. Since Saudi Arabia is the largest oil producer and possesses the main ingredients for the manufacturing of this product, it was only a natural and necessary step to establish a company exclusively for the production of lubricants. The company started its production through its first blending plant in Jeddah in 1970.

The first plant in Jeddah was designed to blend 70,000 M. tonnes; today the plant has grown in size to blend 250,000 M. tonnes annually. The vast geographical spread of Saudi Arabia and the quick development of its infrastructure justified the building of another plant in Riyadh to cover the increasing market demand. Riyadh plant was completed in 1982 with a capacity of 150,000 M. tonnes.

The increased blending capacity allowed the company to conclude third party blending arrangements, whereby competitors in this field utilized the plants of the company to produce their own brands through blending fee arrangements. Over the years, many of the major international companies blended their products at the company's plants, such as Mobil, Elf, Agip, Gulf, TOTAL and others.

In 1995, the company decided to build its own drum manufacturing plant in Riyadh to cover its own requirement of over 200,000 metal drums annually and sell the same to the third party blenders. This plant now operates under a joint venture with a global player.

Within the 45+ years, since its inception, Petromin Corporation has continually expanded and grown in manufacturing capacity and product development. Striving always to remain on the forefront of technology, by keeping its products abreast with all original engine manufacturer (OEM) approvals and keeping up with American Petroleum Institute (API) and other worldwide entities' performance levels and specifications for their products . Today, Petromin Corporation produces over 150 different products, is the market leader in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, exports to over 35 countries in the GCC, Middle East, Africa and Asia. Where it is deemed that exports are not feasible, and where the demand for Petromin Oils is attractive, the company normally concludes royalty or local blending arrangements whereby Petromin gets its product manufactured and marketed under its brand name and under company's strict quality controls and procedures.
