يقع المتحف الوطني في الجانب الشرقي من مركز الملك عبد العزيز التاريخي, بحي المربع بمدينة الرياض بجوار قصر الملك عبدالعزيز (المربع) .بني على أرض تبلغ مساحتها حوالي 17000 متر مربع، أما المساحة الإجمالية لمبانيه حوالي 28000 متر مربّعا .فتتحه خادم الحرمين الشريفين الملك فهد يرحمه الله عام 1419 هـ ضمن الإفتتاح الكبير لمركز الملك عبدالعزيز التاريخي بمناسبة مرور مائة عام على دخول الملك عبدالعزيز رحمه الله الرياض في عام 1319هـ. وقد تم تطوير البرنامج المعماري للمتحف بعناية لبناء مؤسسة من نوعية تضاهي مثيلاتها الجديرة بالاحترام على مستوى العالم. ويتجاوب مبنى المتحف الوطني معمارياً مع المقياس والتشكيل الحجمي للمباني التاريخية، المجاورة المتمثلة في قصور الملك عبدالعزيز بالمربع.كما تمّ تطويرُ شكل مبناه كمبنى حديث مكمل للتكوين العمراني الشامل للمحيط، و تمّ الوصول إلى حلول تفصيلية متوافقة مع المقياس الإنساني المساهمة في تنشيط الحركة السياحية داخل مدينة الرياض. مكونات المتحف: -البهو الرئيس. -قاعات العرض وعددها ثمان قاعات عرض دائم. -قاعة عروض مؤقتة وقاعة مخصصة للتوسع المستقبلي. -المكاتب الإدارية. -المرافق الفنية المكونة من: -مخازن المقتنيات -مرافق البحث -المختبرات تمثّل قاعات العرض الثمانية المقسمة بحسب الموضوعات تطور شبه الجزيرة العربية الطبيعي، والإنساني، والثقافي، والسياسي، والديني حسب سيناريو العرض المتحفي، وصولا إلى تطور المملكة العربية السعودية بأطوارها الثلاثة. عدد القطع المعروضة في المتحف حاليا 3700 قطعة أثرية وتراثية موزعة على القاعات الثمان إجمالي خزائن العرض (221) خزانة. إجمالي عدد الوسائل التصويرية (900) وسيلة. إجمالي عدد الأفلام والمؤثرات الصوتية (45). إجمالي عدد المجسمات (45) مجسما

   On Wednesday 29/4/1436H (18/2/2015), the National Museum held a cultural competition titled (The Art of Reciting Poems) in order to introduce students to the importance of Arabic poetry and to highlight the most important and popular ancient Arab markets in the pre-Islamic era like Souk Okaz.

Many public and private schools participated in the competition, such as Dar Al-Baraa School, Altawhid School, 189 School, 221 Elementary School, Alrisala School, Al-Tarbiyah Al Namouthajiyah School, Al-Riyadh School, Wahat Al-Elm School, Ajyal Al Hadara School, Al-Ummah School and Al-Abrar School. Assistant Professor, Faculty of Arts – Department of Arabic Language, Dr. Hind Almutairi and The Assistant Professor of Arts and Modern Criticism, King Saud University, Dr. Hessa Almufrad also participated in the referee committee which added enthusiasm and promoted the spirit of competition among school students. The program started by receiving guests and participating students dressed in pre-Islamic costume. The program then continued with an opening speech by Program Coordinator, Ms.

Aljohara Aljudaia highlighting the importance of Arabic poetry, this precious documentation of Arabs sustaining their heritage, history, standards and morals. Guests then took a detailed guided tour with the Curator of the pre-Islamic era hall. Participating students then recited poetry from the Souk Okaz platform before the referee committee and attendees in a competitive atmosphere full of enthusiasm, honor. After hearing all participants, the referee committee narrowed down the number of participants then selected qualifying nominees by asking literary questions and definitions of Arabic expressions. There were three finalists; the first winner was Njoud Bin Hani Alghunaim, a student from Albaraa Private School, she won an Ipad. Second place went to Shoug Alktheery, Al-Ummah Private School student who won a camcorder.

Sara Alsalem, Riyadh Private School student got third place and also won a camcorder. The referee committee complimented all participating students emphasizing their bright future in reciting poetry and pre-Islamic poems. The program ended with acknowledgment by the Program Coordinator, who then presented plaques of gratitude to participating students and teachers. Plaques and certificates of appreciation were also presented to the referee committee. A replica was given by the National Museum to the Vice Dean of College of Arts, King Saud University.

After that, they went to a garden adjacent to the museum to entertain the guests. Advisor of the National Museum, Dr. Jackie, commented that it was the first time for her to experience the reciting of Classical Arab poetry, and expressed deep admiration towards the young participants, their talents and pride in Arab glories and their true heritage.
